Diabetic Foot Ulcer- Case 1 Wound Healing

I like to share a story of a diabetic who had foot ulcer. He is a 66 year old gentleman and has diabetes for the past 22 years.....On 26 September 2013, I accidentally met him at Foot and Wound  Care Centre, HSNZ , KT.

His right foot suffered a lot and one of his toes fell off while being cleaned by the nurse. He complaints the pain on his foot.

An orthopedic surgeon happened to be around and examined  him and made a strong recommendation that he  (patient) be warded for immediate treatment.  The Centre managed to send him to the ward.

Today, I met him again by chance. After 10 days, his wound is getting better. By the way, he lost 3 toes during the operation. He is lucky, if not whole right foot will be amputated.

During our conversation,  he said the lost toes are source of pain. Now the pain is diminishing slowly. This means, his wound is healing progressively.

The lessons learnt from this experience:

  • never delay going to the clinic/hospital to get treatment, if you have foot ulcer.
  • always check your feet for any blister, cut or wound.
  • always control your diet and calorie intake if you are diabetics.
  • always do some form of exercise every day.
  • always take the medicine according to doctor's directive.
Note: All pictures taken with the permission of the patient for case study or learning purposes.
