What Diabetics Should Ponder

World Diabetes Day falls on 14th November ever year. All around the world are celebrating the day with activities such as forum, exhibitions, walkathon, blood glucose screening, with aim to inform the public on diabetes complication.

This year, Diabetes Malaysia will launch the World Diabetes Day on 17th December 2013 in Kuching, Sarawak.  Hope, Malaysians or others will celebrate this day with activities that benefit the society at large.

In Malaysia too, the World Diabetes Day is also being celebrated by Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS). This society is organizing a walkathon on 10th of November 2013 in Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur with 5km/7km/10km walk.

The message from the MEMS President:

" cornerstone for diabetes control remains lifestyle modifications. Increasing physical activity through regular exercise together with controlled energy intake and low processed carbohydrate diet help to establish control of blood glucose levels and prevent weight gain."

If I may add, the key words (to be understood and acted upon) :

  • lifestyle modification
  • increase physical activity
  • regular exercise
  • controlled energy intake
  • low processed carbohydrate diet
  • prevent weight gain

The handicapped group, all of them on wheel-chair (of various size) and were flagged off by the Terengganu State Secretary at 7.20 am on Saturday.

The 5 km racing on wheel chair exposing the capability of each participants. The famous Malaysian icon, Ms Ras Adibah Radzi (who herself is a handicapped)  was also taking part.

The medical team followed them all along from the start at Jalan Persiaran , Batu Buruk, Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin, towards Jalan Sultan Ismail, turned left to Jalan Sultan Omar and finally to Jalan Kamaruddin then it reached the finish line at Batu Buruk beach.

There is no casualty. However, I noticed some use wrong type of wheel chairs which were not suitable for the racing. Overall we enjoyed the 5km walk, just like the 10,000 steps that we used to do previously.
